Invisalign –the Modern Replacement for Braces
Dental braces have long been the best appliance for correcting misaligned teeth. However, they have the following disadvantages:
• They are visible and conspicuous, and they compromise your dental aesthetics.
• You need to regularly visit your dentist every month or more for two to three years
• Sharp edges of braces will sometimes irritate your oral tissue.
Invisalign is the answer modern dental technology offers to these limitations of traditional braces.
What is Invisalign?
The Invisalign system consists of removable aligners which are made from a proprietary clear plastic so that they are virtually invisible when they are worn. These aligners come in the form of a custom-made set for your teeth, one for each jaw.
The Process of Getting Invisalign Aligners
To start your treatment, we will first perform a detailed examination of your oral cavity to determine whether Invisalign is suitable for you. If it is, we will make a digital, three-dimensional impression of your teeth and oral cavity. This data will then be fed into customized software, which will be used to determine the optimum treatment plan for you. This software will also allow you to visualize how your teeth will ultimately look. Based on this plan, we will prepare your Invisalign aligners using a CAD/CAM machine.
How does Invisalign Work?
You will successively wear each numbered aligner for about two weeks. The first aligner will put pressure on your teeth that moves them slightly towards the planned ultimate alignment. Then you put on the next aligner without needing to visit the dentist. Each set of aligners will continue to move your teeth in stages to the best possible tooth alignment, as determined by your dentist.
At the end of treatment, that is when you have worn the last bracket, you will have a perfect smile. However, to consolidate your gain you need to get retainers and wear them for about six months. Otherwise, the teeth will return to their original misaligned positions.
